Cenote diving · Open Water

Ponderosa and Tajma Ha is the day that shows you two different cenotes in one morning. Ponderosa, also called El Edén, is a huge open pool ringed by jungle, with sunlit shallows full of freshwater fish and turtles, a sweeping cavern line along the rock wall and one of the best haloclines in the Riviera Maya. Tajma Ha, a few minutes down the road, packs decorated rooms, deep blue passages and the famous Sugar Bowl light chamber into a single line. Both stay shallow, so Open Water is enough, and we run the day with a maximum of four divers per guide.

The experience

Why Ponderosa and Tajma Ha belong on the same day

Ponderosa earns its other name. El Edén is a wide, open pool with jungle on every side, where the shallows are full of small fish and freshwater turtles and the sun reaches all the way to the rock. The cavern line runs along the wall of the pool rather than into the dark, so daylight stays with you, and the halocline here is one of the finest in the region: a rippling, oily curtain where fresh and salt water meet. It is also a lovely place to linger after the dive, and non diving companions can snorkel while you are down.

Tajma Ha is the photographer’s cenote, and yes, the name is a play on the Taj Mahal. One line takes you through decorated rooms, deep blue passages and more than one halocline to the Sugar Bowl, a chamber where the sun angles spotlight beams into the darkness on a bright day. It asks a little more of your trim than Ponderosa, which is why we dive it second, once everyone has settled into fresh water.

The two dives

Dive 1: Ponderosa (El Edén)

We start in the open pool, drop through the sunlit shallows and follow the guideline along the rock wall of the cenote. The route stays within sight of the surface for most of the dive, passes a decorated section beneath the overhang and reaches the halocline in the deeper part of the loop. It is an easy, bright dive with plenty of life for a fresh water site, and the ideal way to get your buoyancy dialled in before Tajma Ha.

Dive 2: Tajma Ha

A short drive brings you to a smaller, quieter entrance and a very different dive. The line leads through rooms hung with stalactites, across passages that turn a deep blue where daylight filters in from side openings, and through a halocline or two before the Sugar Bowl, where beams of sunlight fall through the opening above like stage lights. Your guide keeps the pace slow: the formations are close, the light changes every few metres, and there is a lot to look at.

Who Ponderosa and Tajma Ha is for

  • Open Water divers who want an easy cenote and a decorated one in the same morning
  • Photographers who want a halocline, blue passages and the Sugar Bowl beams on one memory card
  • Groups with non diving partners or children who can snorkel at Ponderosa while you dive
  • Divers working up to the delicate sites such as Dreamgate, because Tajma Ha is the perfect rehearsal

Advanced Open Water is not required. If you have not dived for a while, tell us when you book and we plan a gentle first dive or a reef refresher the day before. Not certified yet? The Open Water course is the starting point.

The rules that keep cenote diving safe

  • Cavern, not cave: we stay within the daylight zone on a permanent guideline. Full cave diving is a separate activity that requires cave certification
  • One guide for a maximum of four divers
  • No gloves, no knives, no touching formations, and no fin contact with the rock, especially in the decorated rooms of Tajma Ha
  • No sunscreen or insect repellent before the dive, because the cenote water is the region’s drinking water
  • Cameras are welcome. Each cenote charges a camera fee of 300 to 500 MXN that goes to the landowners who maintain the site

Ponderosa diving questions

What divers ask us before they book this cenote.

  • Do I need Advanced Open Water for Ponderosa and Tajma Ha?

No. Both cenotes stay shallow, so Open Water Diver or an equivalent certification is enough. Tajma Ha asks for steady buoyancy because the formations are close, which is why we dive Ponderosa first.

  • How deep are Ponderosa and Tajma Ha?

Ponderosa runs to about 12 to 14 metres at the halocline and Tajma Ha to about 13 metres. Both dives last around 45 minutes with plenty of no decompression time.

  • What is the Sugar Bowl?

A chamber at Tajma Ha with an opening above it. On a bright day the sun sends beams through the opening into the dark room, and divers hover in the spotlight. The effect is strongest when the sun is high, so we time the second dive for it when we can.

  • Can non divers come along?

Yes. Ponderosa is one of the best cenotes for snorkelling companions: an open pool with fish, turtles and easy access. Tell us your group when you book and we plan the morning around it.

  • Is there a halocline?

Ponderosa has one of the best in the Riviera Maya, and Tajma Ha has more than one. Swimming through the boundary between fresh and salt water blurs your vision for a moment before it clears again.

  • How far are Ponderosa and Tajma Ha from Playa del Carmen?

About 25 to 30 minutes by road, south towards Puerto Aventuras, and a few minutes between the two cenotes. You are back in Playa del Carmen in the early afternoon.
