Why divers cross the channel

Cozumel sits beside a deep channel that pushes a steady current along its western shore, and that current is the whole point: you descend, hover, and let it carry you past coral buttresses, giant sponges and walls that drop into blue water, with visibility that routinely passes 30 metres. The reefs are inside the Cozumel Reefs National Marine Park, so they are protected and healthy, and the classics have names every diver knows: Palancar, Santa Rosa Wall, Columbia, the shallow gardens of Paradise Reef.

• Drift dives where the current does the work and the boat follows the group, so there is no swimming back
• Walls and swim throughs on the deeper sites, with the sense of scale that made Cozumel famous
• Shallow gardens for the second dive or for divers who prefer to stay above 18 metres
• Turtles, eagle rays, nurse sharks and the splendid toadfish that lives nowhere else

We choose the two sites on the day, for the current, the conditions and the experience in the group; a particular reef or a particular animal can never be promised. The Cozumel or Playa del Carmen guide compares the two sides of the channel honestly.

The day

How the Cozumel day runs

1. 08:00 at Coco Beach Meet us on the beach in Playa del Carmen for the briefing and the gear check before the boat leaves.
2. The crossing A fast, direct run by speedboat to the reefs off Cozumel’s western shore; no ferry, no taxi on the island.
3. Dive one A drift along one of the walls or deeper reefs, with the boat following the group.
4. Brunch on the boat A sandwich, fruit, a muffin and water during the surface interval.
5. Dive two A second drift, usually shallower, on a different reef.
6. Back in Playa by about 12:30 The afternoon is free, and the next day can be a cenote.

Boat trips depend on the sea and on the harbour master, who closes the port on windy days. If the trip cannot run, you choose another day or a refund, so book the Cozumel day early in your stay to leave room to move it.

Who the trip is for

Certified divers who are comfortable in the water and can hold their buoyancy while the current carries them. Open Water is enough for the shallower reefs; the deep walls sit beyond 18 metres and need Advanced Open Water or equivalent logged experience, and we plan the two sites around the certifications in the group. If it has been a while since your last dive, a reef morning in Playa the day before is the right warm up: shallower, calmer, and a chance to sort out weights and gear before the crossing. Non divers can start with the Open Water course, three days in Playa del Carmen.
