Hells Bells formations hanging over the blue water of Cenote Zapote

For guests staying in Cancún

Scuba Diving from Cancún

The diving worth travelling for is south of Cancún, and it is an hour down the coast. Every dive day starts in Playa del Carmen, where we pick up: the cenote routes from Zapote near Puerto Morelos to Dos Ojos and El Pit near Tulum, the bull sharks, the reef mornings and the Cozumel speedboat. Take the ADO bus or a taxi down, or move to Playa for a few nights, and we plan the days with you.

The cenotes

Cenotes between Cancún and Playa del Carmen

The Ruta de los Cenotes turns inland from the highway at Puerto Morelos, half way between Cancún and Playa del Carmen, and two of our routes are on it: Zapote, home of the Hells Bells formations over a white hydrogen sulphide cloud at 30 metres, for Advanced divers, and Kin Ha, a quieter park cenote with a big chamber and a route open to Open Water divers.

The rest of the cenotes are south of Playa del Carmen: Chac Mool twenty minutes past our base, Dos Ojos and El Pit near Tulum. From Cancún a cenote day is a full day out: you come down to Playa for our pickup, then two guided cavern dives with a maximum of four divers per guide, and tanks, weights, full equipment and park fees included in the route price. All nine routes are on the cenote diving in Playa del Carmen page.

The sea

Bull sharks, reef mornings and Cozumel from Playa del Carmen

Our boat days start in Playa del Carmen, about an hour from the Cancún hotel zone by road. From November to February the bull shark dives at Shark Point are the reason many divers make the trip: 24 metres on the sand, no cage, observation dives for 2,800 MXN with Nitrox and a second reef dive. The two tank reef morning is 2,200 MXN, and the Cozumel speedboat meets at Coco Beach in Playa at 08:00, with two drift dives in the marine park and brunch on the boat for 3,400 MXN, back by about 12:30.

Every dive day starts in Playa del Carmen; the ADO bus from the hotel zone and the airport runs all day and a taxi or rental car takes about an hour. Many guests move down to Playa for two or three nights and dive every day from there, which is the easiest way to do the sharks, a cenote and Cozumel in one trip.

Courses

Learning to dive from Cancún

Learning to dive means three consecutive days at our base in Playa del Carmen: the pool sessions and the four ocean dives of the Open Water course are on the reefs in front of it, so it works best if you stay in Playa for those days or accept three early starts from Cancún. The same goes for the Advanced course, Rescue Diver and Divemaster; all four are on the diving courses page.

How the transport works

Pickups run in Playacar and downtown Playa del Carmen only, so every dive day starts in Playa: cenote days with our pickup, reef mornings at our base at 08:00 and the Cozumel trip at Coco Beach at 08:00. From Cancún the ADO bus runs all day from the hotel zone and the airport, and a taxi or rental car takes about an hour. For more than one dive day, staying in Playa for a few nights is the easier plan.

Good to know

Questions from guests in Cancún

What divers staying outside Playa del Carmen ask us before they book.

  • Do you have a dive shop in Cancún?

No. Xibalba Divers MX is based in Playacar, Playa del Carmen, about an hour south of the Cancún hotel zone. Every dive day, cenotes included, starts in Playa, where we pick up.

  • Which cenotes are closest to Cancún?

Zapote and Kin Ha on the Ruta de los Cenotes near Puerto Morelos, 35 to 45 minutes from the hotel zone. Zapote’s Hells Bells sit at 30 metres and need Advanced Open Water; Kin Ha is open to Open Water divers.

  • Is transport included from Cancún?

No, pickups run in Playacar and downtown Playa del Carmen only. You come down to Playa by ADO bus, taxi or rental car, about an hour, and on cenote days the route price then includes the transport to the cenote, equipment and park fees.

  • Can I dive with the bull sharks as a day trip from Cancún?

Yes, from November to February. The dive starts in Playa del Carmen in the morning, about an hour from Cancún, and you are back on the beach before lunch. Advanced Open Water is recommended for the 24 metre site.

  • Is it worth staying in Playa del Carmen instead?

For more than one dive day, usually yes: every boat day and course starts here, the cenotes are twenty to forty five minutes away, and you avoid an hour on the road each way. Many guests move down for two or three nights.

  • How do I get from Cancún to Playa del Carmen?

The ADO bus runs all day from the airport and downtown, a taxi or rental car takes about an hour on the highway, and colectivo vans run between Puerto Morelos and Playa. We confirm the pickup point and time when you book.

  • Can I do a cenote day if I am Open Water certified?

Yes. Most routes are cavern dives within the daylight zone and open to Open Water divers with good buoyancy. Zapote, El Pit and Angelita reach 30 metres and need Advanced Open Water.

  • How do I book?

Send your hotel or area, your dates and your certification level through the quick booking form or on WhatsApp. We reply the same day with the days that fit and the pickup point and time in Playa.
