The course

What the Divemaster course covers

The Divemaster course develops the knowledge, the water skills and the judgement to work as a dive professional: assisting instructors on courses, guiding certified divers and running the practical side of a dive day. With us it happens in a working dive centre, so the practical part is real.

  • Dive theory: physics, physiology, equipment, decompression theory and the dive environment, with exams at the end
  • Water skills and stamina: the swim, the tread, the snorkel swim and the tired diver tow, plus a demonstration quality skills circuit
  • Practical application: mapping a dive site, a search and recovery scenario, deep dive planning and emergency management
  • Supervised practice: assisting Humann on Open Water and Advanced courses, and guiding certified divers on the reefs
  • The Riviera Maya as a classroom: reef mornings, the Mama Viña wreck, cenote days as an observer, Cozumel drift dives and, in season, the bull sharks

How it runs

How the course runs

  1. Knowledge development The theory sections at your own pace, with Humann for the questions, and the exams when you are ready.
  2. Skills and stamina The pool skills circuit to demonstration standard and the water skills assessments, early in the course so the rest can build on them.
  3. Practical days Assisting on courses, guiding reef mornings under supervision, the mapping project and the scenarios, spread over the weeks you are here.
  4. Certification With 60 logged dives, the exams passed and the practical assessments signed off, you are a Divemaster, able to work anywhere in the world.

How long it takes depends on your starting point and how many days a week you can dive; we plan the schedule with you before you commit.

Who it is for

Who the course is for

Rescue Divers with at least 40 logged dives who want to work in diving, or who simply want to dive at a professional standard. You need to be 18 or older, hold a current first aid and CPR certification, and bring a medical certificate signed by a doctor within the last 12 months. The course runs in English, German or Spanish, and speaking more than one of them is an advantage for a Divemaster on this coast.

Train where the diving is varied

Most Divemaster candidates train on one type of reef. Here you assist on courses on the sheltered reefs, guide drift dives, learn the Mama Viña wreck, sit in on cenote briefings with an instructor who is also a cave diver, and see how bull shark dives are run in season. That range is what makes a Divemaster from Playa del Carmen employable anywhere.

Divemaster course questions

What divers ask us before they book this course.

  • How long does the Divemaster course take?

It depends on your dive count and how many days a week you can train; we plan a realistic schedule with you before you commit rather than promising a fixed number of days.

  • What is included in the 25,750 MXN?

Pool training, theory lessons, all the practical dives and the certification fee. The learning materials are bought separately, and we tell you the exact cost when you apply.

  • Do I need my own equipment?

For the course itself we can help with rental, but a working Divemaster needs a complete personal set, and we advise on what to buy and where.

  • How many dives do I need?

40 logged dives to start and 60 to be certified. The dives you make during the course count towards the 60.

  • Can I work as a Divemaster afterwards?

Yes. The certification is recognised worldwide and lets you guide certified divers and assist instructors, in Mexico or anywhere else.

  • Do I need Rescue Diver first?

Yes, plus a first aid and CPR certification from the last 24 months. If you are Advanced, the Rescue course is three days and can be done right before.

  • What is different about training in Playa del Carmen?

The range: reefs, a wreck, cenote days, Cozumel and seasonal shark dives, all from one small centre, and a mentor who is both an instructor and a cave diver.

  • Which agency?

PADI or SDI; we confirm it with you when you apply, and the schedule is the same either way.
