The course

What you learn

The Rescue Diver course teaches you to prevent problems and to manage them when they happen, in the water and on the surface. It is demanding in the best way: you tow, you lift, you search, you think under pressure, and by the third day the responses are automatic.

  • Self rescue and recognising stress in yourself and in other divers
  • Helping a tired diver and a panicked diver, at the surface and underwater
  • Responding to an unresponsive diver: surfacing, rescue breathing, exiting the water and handing over
  • Search patterns for a missing diver and how to manage a scene from the boat or the beach
  • Equipment problems, gas management and the emergency plan for the sites we dive

Day by day

How the three days run

  1. Day 1: theory and pool Knowledge development in the morning, then the pool: self rescue, tired and panicked diver responses, tows and the unresponsive diver skills, all in shallow water first.
  2. Day 2: open water scenarios Two ocean dives where the skills move to the reef: searches, underwater problems, surfacing an unresponsive diver and getting them to the boat.
  3. Day 3: the rescue scenarios Two more dives built around realistic scenarios that put it all together, from the first sign of trouble to the handover on shore. The final review closes the course and your Rescue Diver card is issued.

Who it is for

Who the course is for

Advanced Open Water divers who want to be the diver everyone is glad to have on the boat: buddies, parents diving with their children, divers heading towards Divemaster, and anyone whose confidence underwater has not caught up with their certification. The minimum age is 12 for the junior certification, and the course runs in English, German or Spanish.

You need a current first aid and CPR certification (within the last 24 months). If you do not have one, tell us when you book so we can plan it before the course.

Why divers call it the best course they ever took

Open Water teaches you to dive; Rescue teaches you to look after other divers. It is the point where diving stops being about your own gauges and becomes a shared activity, and it is a prerequisite for Divemaster. Most students say it was hard work and the most satisfying three days of their diving.

Rescue Diver course questions

What divers ask us before they book this course.

  • What do I need before the Rescue course?

An Advanced Open Water certification from any agency and a first aid and CPR certification from the last 24 months. If you are missing the first aid course, tell us when you book and we plan it before the Rescue days.

  • Is the Rescue course physically hard?

It is active: towing a diver, lifting them onto a boat, swimming searches. You do not need to be an athlete, but you should be a comfortable swimmer and reasonably fit.

  • Is there an exam?

There is a written final exam alongside the scenarios, and the theory is straightforward if you read the materials before you arrive.

  • How many people are in the group?

Small groups, so every student plays both rescuer and victim in every scenario. That repetition is what makes the skills automatic.

  • Does Rescue lead to Divemaster?

Yes. Rescue Diver plus a current first aid certification are the prerequisites for the Divemaster course, and most of our Divemaster candidates do the two back to back.

  • What is included in the price?

Learning materials, theory sessions, pool training, four open water dives, full rental equipment and the certification fee. Nothing is added later.

  • Can I combine Rescue with fun diving?

Yes. Many students add a reef morning, a cenote day or a Cozumel trip after the course, and the rescue skills make those dives more relaxed.

  • Which agency issues the card?

PADI or SDI, your choice; the skills and the recognition are the same. We confirm the agency when you book.
