The cenotes

The cenotes on your doorstep

The stretch of highway between Playa del Carmen and Puerto Aventuras holds more cavern diving than anywhere else on the coast. On a cenote day we pick you up in Playa del Carmen, dive two caverns with a maximum of four divers per guide, and are back in Playa after lunch; tanks, weights, full equipment and the park fees are included in the route price.

  • Chac Mool and Kukulkan: ten minutes north of the marina, wide forgiving caverns, an air dome and a strong halocline, from 3,000 MXN for two dives
  • Chikin Ha: a bright, shallow cavern system a few minutes away, ideal for a first cenote day
  • Ponderosa and Tajma Ha: the open garden of Ponderosa and the decorated rooms of Tajma Ha, both next to Puerto Aventuras
  • Dos Ojos, Taak Bi Ha and El Pit: twenty five minutes south towards Tulum, the classics and the deep cathedral for Advanced divers

All nine routes, with prices and the level each one asks for, are on the cenote diving in Playa del Carmen page.

The sea

Reef mornings, Cozumel and the sharks from Playa del Carmen

Our boat days start in Playa del Carmen, twenty to twenty five minutes up the highway by taxi or rental car. The two tank reef morning is 2,200 MXN for two dives on the home reefs, ten minutes by boat from the beach, back before lunch. The Cozumel speedboat meets at Coco Beach in Playa at 08:00, two drift dives in the marine park with brunch on the boat, back by about 12:30, 3,400 MXN. From November to February the bull shark dives at Shark Point run from Playa as well.

Puerto Aventuras has its own marina and reefs, but we do not operate boats from there; reef mornings meet at our base in Playacar at 08:00, and a taxi from Puerto Aventuras is a short, easy ride.

Courses

Learning to dive while you are here

Learning to dive means three consecutive mornings in Playa del Carmen: the pool sessions and the four ocean dives of the Open Water course are at our base and on the reefs in front of it. If you are already certified, the Advanced course can include a cenote day as one of its adventure dives. All four courses are on the diving courses page.

How the transport works

Pickups run in Playacar and downtown Playa del Carmen only, so every dive day starts in Playa: cenote days with our pickup, reef mornings at our base at 08:00 and the Cozumel trip at Coco Beach at 08:00. From Puerto Aventuras that is twenty to twenty five minutes up the highway by taxi, rental car or colectivo, and we confirm the pickup point and time when you book.

What divers staying outside Playa del Carmen ask us before they book.

  • Do you have a dive shop in Puerto Aventuras?

No. Xibalba Divers MX is based in Playacar, Playa del Carmen, about twenty minutes north, and every dive day starts there. Several of the best caverns are between Playa and Puerto Aventuras, so the drive to them is short.

  • Which cenotes are closest to Puerto Aventuras?

Chac Mool and Kukulkan are ten minutes north of the marina; Chikin Ha, Ponderosa and Tajma Ha are a few minutes away. Dos Ojos, Taak Bi Ha and El Pit are about twenty five minutes south towards Tulum.

  • Is pickup included from Puerto Aventuras?

No, pickups run in Playacar and downtown Playa del Carmen only. From Puerto Aventuras you come up to Playa by taxi, rental car or colectivo, twenty to twenty five minutes, and the cenote route price then includes the transport to the cenote, equipment and park fees.

  • How do I get to Playa del Carmen for a reef morning or the Cozumel boat?

Taxi or rental car up the highway, twenty to twenty five minutes. The colectivo vans along the highway are the cheap option and run all day. Reef mornings meet at our base in Playacar at 08:00, the Cozumel trip at Coco Beach at 08:00.
