Two entrances open into wide caverns where the afternoon sun creates curtains of blue light, the passages are broad enough that nobody feels closed in, and the whole route stays within the daylight zone on a permanent guideline. It is also the closest cenote park to Playa del Carmen, which means less time in the van and more time in the water.

The finale is a strong halocline, the shimmering layer where fresh water floats on salt water. Swim through it and the view turns to oil for a few seconds before it snaps back to perfect clarity. Divers talk about it for the rest of the day.

A diver beneath a beam of sunlight in crystal clear cenote water, the Kukulkan effect on a sunny late morning.

Silhouette under a light shaft: the caverns here are wide and bright throughout.

The two dives

Dive 1: Chac Mool

The classic Chac Mool route enters through the main pool, follows the line through open cavern lit from two directions and passes beneath an air dome where you can surface inside the cave, look up at the stalactites and exchange wide eyed looks with your buddy before dropping back onto the line. The halocline sits in the deeper section of the loop, so the route saves its strangest moment for the end.

Dive 2: Kukulkan

Kukulkan shares the same park and is famous for one thing above all: light. On a sunny late morning the entrance pool projects a wall of parallel beams through the blue, and divers describe it as standing inside a cathedral window. It is an easy, calm dive with a gentle profile, which is why photographers schedule it around the sun and why we usually dive it second, when the light is at its best.

Who Chac Mool and Kukulkan is for

Open Water certified divers making their first cenote dive

Divers with limited time who want a cenote morning without a long drive

Photographers who want light beams and a halocline on the same day

Anyone unsure about overhead environments: the caverns are wide and daylight stays in view throughout

Advanced Open Water is not required.
